William "Bill" MacIver Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 19, 2025.
With broken hearts we announce Bill's passing on January 17, 2025. He passed away peacefully at home in Toronto, ON, surrounded by his family. He will be dearly missed and forever loved by his wife Nancy (née Mason) of 38 years and his children Andrew (Megan), John (Paige) and Sarah (Zach). Bill was an amazing brother to Sandra (Vic), Donald, Martha (Eric), and Ross (Cho-Gway). Brother-in-law to David Mason, son-in-law to Eileen Mason. Wonderful uncle to Rob (Jenna), Elizabeth and Alistair. Bill graduated from the University of Western Ontario and had a very successful 30+ year career at IBM Canada managing various development teams. Over the years he served his communities as a Scout leader, hockey coach, neighbourhood rink builder and as a member of the Bala Aquatic Association. Bill was passionate about being active. He loved backcountry canoeing, was an amazing downhill skier, avid hockey player, completed two marathons and was a general fitness enthusiast. Bill was always game to tackle any DIY project at home, the cottage, the kids' homes or with friends. Two of his favourite projects were building a boat house and wood-fired sauna at our beloved Muskoka cottage. Just this summer he worked alongside contractors to raise and winterize the cottage so that it could be enjoyed year round. His love of food, games, travel and life in general is surpassed only by his love and pride in his family and friends. Bill maintained friendships with people from every facet of his life. He will be deeply missed by many friends and extended family, especially his best friend Guy Wilson.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday January 25th at Rosedale Golf Club, 1901 Mt. Pleasant Rd, Toronto, between 1pm and 4pm, with remembrances at 2 (club dress code in effect). In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or the charity of your choice.

I have been at a loss for words since learning that Bill passed, and since attending the celebration of life for Bill. It was fitting that hundreds of people were there.

Bill was that kind of person... he was a force of life and I knew it since we all met at Western (Bill, Nancy, Todd, Sonia, Mark, Katherine, Ian and others). I certainly saw it often when we shared an apartment in our final year. Bill put up with me and my motorcycle, laughed with me, scolded me, watched downhill racing with me, shared some "Altoids" with me, and cooked some crazy good roast chicken dinners. He was and remained super smart and super sharp (wit, sarcasm, irony... all of it).

The world deserved more Bill. Nancy and their kids and their friends deserved more Bill.

May the fullness of time bring comfort with many memories and much gratitude for the impact he had on those closest to him, and all of us.

Bill, along with you, have always been among the first to reach out and support and assist friends.
Please reach out if there is anything we could do/be of help with.
We were very sad that we were not able to attend Bill´s Celebration of Life.

My heartfelt condolences to Bill's family, I'm so sad to hear the news about his passing. Bill was one of my very first managers at IBM and he helped me so much in my early career. He was always there to help when needed and to lighten a situation with a joke or a pun. Such a great guy. He will be missed.

Nancy, Kathy and I am so sorry to hear of Bills passing, our prayers and thoughts are with you and the family. As you know Bill and I worked together but I viewed him more as a brother. He helped and supported me in ways no one would think was possible. He strived for excellence in not only his work but how he could support you and the team. There is no doubt in my mind that right now he is up stairs trying to figure out how he can help us all down here. In the end it is not about your accomplishments it is about how you helped others, Bill was a champion in that required. Sincerely Ken

Martha and Sandra. I am so sorry about Bill. I heard frequently from Dave and Judi Forbes (very close friends) what a great guy your Bill was. I recall talking to him briefly about the calendar I would send to my wonderful God Mother every year. I apologize that the Bosley's didn't make the celebration of Bill's like last Saturday. I live on Hilton Head Is., SC and unfortunately Mike and Jane who intended to attend both came down ill. Tom and Ann weren't aware of the celebration of life.

I would love to reconnect - it has been a long time. Last I heard Martha was living in Florida and Sandra still in Toronto. My email is wlb.bosleygroup.com and I am on Facebook until william.l.bosley where I frequently publish my photos. I would greatly enjoy hearing from you both. Bill

Bill's Sunday night hockey friends will remember him by his often repeated statement: "Short shifts, skate hard, get off." He always "left it all on the ice". Although he didn't get as many "shifts" in life as we would have liked, it is clear that he made the most of the time he had on the ice or off. His full commitment to everything he did will remain an inspiration to us all.

Nancy - Leslie and I are so sorry for your loss.

Bill was a great guy and a key member of our golf/lunch group since we all worked together in the late '80's. He was the youngest of the group which simply adds to our sadness. His generosity, energy, and infectious sense of fun will be sorely missed.

I've attached a photo of the group from 2017.

Our sincere sympathy, Nancy, to you and your family that Bill´s journey is finished far too soon. He was such a vital part of the Bala Aquatic Association with you at his side. He was kept busy organizing, assisting and competing ... and winning. He was so helpful making sure the younger competitors had a boat or a partner or being a partner if he fit the age group. What a special guy who always helped others have a great regatta with his love of the day. Thanks for all the wonderful memories he gave us. We will dearly miss him from the group.

January 21, 2025

Nancy, it is with heavy hearts that Cathie and I send you and your family our deepest condolences over the loss of our close friend Bill.

I first met Bill in the mid-1980s as he had just joined IBM and we worked together on the same project. We often referred to Bill as the baby of our small group as he was so young and keen and a terrific member of the team. He was Young Bill to us all.

I fondly remember a departmental team weekend get-together at your cottage the summer of 1988. Bill took us tubing and water skiing around the two islands across from your cottage on Dudley Bay. It was a wonderful joyful day for us all, and an experience I have often remembered with the happiest of memories.

The group of us who worked on that project continued our close relationship over the decades referring to our little group of 8 as The Hooters. As a group we got together regularly for Hoots, be it for golf outings, lunches, wings and beer, and celebrating each other´s milestones and achievements. Bill will always be a fondly remembered and deeply missed member of The Hooters.

With our thoughts and prayers.

January 20, 2025

I met Bill shortly after we both started working in the same department at IBM, in 1984. I met Nancy when she came to Toronto, and lived in my mother's house before she married Bill. We hosted them at Alpine Ski Club, when they visited us in our Thornbury place a couple of times. After I left my IBM career, I still enjoyed seeing them and their expanding family, as Andrew, John and Sarah joined the visits to Herbie's dental office. I am happy that I got to see Bill a few months ago, at his weekly hockey game with my son, Mitch. I'm sad to know that his life's journey has been cut so short. Herbie and I send you our sincere condolences on your terrible loss. We hope great memories of your years together will help comfort you at this difficult time.
Sincerely,
Herbie and Rickey Belman

My deepest condolences. This is heart breaking.
Bill interviewed me for my first job after graduation and became my second line manager after I was hired for the job. He was smart, sharp, held our team to high standards but always kind to everyone. He was so generous in spirit, inviting the whole team to his family cottage and offering encouraging words and visits when I was on short term sick leave from work. I will always remember his kindness, smiles, love for life and his super warm family especially his sweet little girl Sarah. Rest in peace Bill!

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
